Diploma of Project Management

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who apply project management skills and knowledge. They may manage projects in a variety of contexts, across a number of industry sectors. They have project leadership and management roles and are responsible for achieving project objectives. They possess a sound theoretical knowledge base and use a range of specialised, technical and managerial competencies to initiate, plan, execute and evaluate their own work and/or the work of others.

There are 12 nationally accredited units, 8 Core and 4 Elective.

Project managers working as professionals are found across all economic, industry and government sectors. The skills and tools of project management, that is, project management methods can be applied irrespective of the business or subject of the project.

Research undertaken in the review and update of this critical qualification has highlighted the Industry need for a more generic PM Qualification that will allow for transferability across and within different industry sectors and this is what the Diploma of Project Management delivers!

In the global workplace, there are many alternative and in some cases competing project ‘methods’ or approaches sometimes based on different emphasis (e.g. focus on budget and/or stakeholder engagement) and in other cases a different mindset (e.g. linear vs. iterative methods, such as the Agile method used in many current IT projects).

There are also a range of ‘public’ and ‘private’ competency standards and methodologies in use both nationally and internationally, including:

The changes in this qualification acknowledge the variety of methods and contexts for project management, and introduce a flexible approach to ensure application across the range of environments.

In particular, the units of competency are not aligned with any one particular approach, but can be broadly aligned with the approach taken by both the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) and the Project Management Institute (The ‘PMBOK’ – PMI).

The Diploma of Project Management is designed to enable growth and accessibility for project management, while providing a relevant basis for industry along with national and international portability.
